These 12 paintings were presented in a one-afternoon pop-up exhibit on the stage of the MMFA’s Wilson Auditorium. All of the smaller paintings were begun and/or finished in situ in a prairie remnant in Sumter County, Alabama in 2025 while the two larger works picture how that prairie, labeled on 19th century maps as Wild Horse Prairie, may have looked long ago. The brief exhibit was part of the event: This Land Then & Now: Conversations about the Culture and Ecology of the Black Belt, held in connection to Philip’s painting Black Belt Prairie c. 1775 which was recently donated to the MMFA.
