At over 4000 feet elevation, Kokeʻe State Park’s uplands, essentially the top of a 5-million-year-old volcano, can receive over 100 inches of rain per year. Swampy openings occupy relatively flat areas amid the cloud forests. The boardwalk of the Alakai Swamp trail goes through several such patches as it leads to the Kilohana overlook.
