I painted this 400-ish year-old poplar on site to gain an understanding of what it means to paint an old-growth forest–knowledge I hope to use later in the studio. I enjoyed the sanctuary-like place with a few other visitors along the Joyce Kilmer upper loop trail until the sky opened up. The hike back to the car was an immersion course in the meaning of temperate rainforest.
