The sky was amazing when I rolled out onto beach road at 7am. I figured I could play it visually against the nearby salt pans (empty stretches of sand in the high marsh where it’s too salty for plants to grow) which I had wanted to try to paint again since an attempt years earlier. By the time I got set up, the rosy clouds of predawn had gone intensely orange! I touched up the painting later in the studio, especially darkening the foreground which the sun was shining on by the time I got to that part of the painting in the field.
