On a November 15 walk beneath the full moon under longleaf pines there was no ground fog so the shadows were like ink wells beneath each tree. Along with Nocturn 1, it was painted solely from memory a few days later in the studio. The gessoed hardboard panel was tinted with a wash of burnt sienna to convey the warm tones I could just barely perceive in the cold moonlight.
