Salicornia, or glasswort, attains a pronounced color in the fall that contrasts nicely with the surrounding salt marsh grasses. On this rainy morning the effect was particularly striking, and even more so since some of taller glasswort stems had turned light yellow. While this scene made a strong impression on me as I biked along Main Beach Road, I was unprepared to stop and paint in the rain. Instead, referring to memory and a few snapshots, I did a quick painting of it that afternoon in LSSI’s barn and touched it up later in my Athens studio.
