Open, verdant slopes maintained by centuries of fire and grazing, and watered by abundant rainfall, seemed to me the essence of the Basque Pyrenees. This particular location was directly above a site labeled on the map as the source of the Nive river (Les Sources de la Nive) where two streams join to become it. A small hotel there borrows the name and was a fine stop on our bike tour. Delicious food there too.
