Remnant View

Nachusa Grasslands, Illinois
June 12, 2018
Oil on canvas
18 x 26 in. (45.7 x 66 cm)

Private collection

I’ve been drawn repeatedly to the paint Nachusa’s gravelly knolls and ridges. Compositionally, they and their oak groves lend themselves nicely as focal points. As high places they offer something I always dream of in exploring Illinois’s prairie remnants: a view of thousands of acres of high-quality tallgrass prairie.

Painted on location.
