After descending a gravel road through the páramo and cloud forests of Chingaza National Park, we dropped below the cloud cover and were greeted by a spectacular view. In the hazy distance the flatlands of the Orinoco River basin were just visible beyond the last ridges of the Andes while several waterfalls cascaded into the gorge of the Rio Guatiquía. Below us, the cloud forests protected by the national park met the encroaching patchwork of agricultural fields surrounding the village of San Juanito. We also discovered that we had cell phone reception.
