The low ridge in the southern section of Nachusa is one of the areas where years of cattle grazing allowed prairie species to survive (They were neither shaded out by tree growth nor plowed under for corn.) Viewed from across a restored prairie full of big bluestem on a stormy day, it made a compelling subject for a painting.
Begun on location, finished in the studio November 2018.
