Forged
by Drought, Flood, and Fire: Scenes of Remnant Landscapes February 27 - March
22, 2004
 |
| This solo exhibition of landscape paintings by Philip Juras
was held at the Circle
Gallery at the University of Geogia. The gallery is part of the HB Owens Library
at the College of Environment and Design. An opening for the exhibit was held
on Friday, February 27th 4pm - 7pm. The 46 paintings in the exhibition were comprised
of both field studies and studio work painted over the last few years. Much
thanks to Rene Shoemaker who was very
much responsible for making this show happen, and to John Allen for helping me
frame it, and to Bill Paul for helping me hang it. Click

| Artist's Statement:
These
paintings explore the visual qualities of natural landscapes that derive their
unique characteristics from the limiting stresses of repeated natural disturbances,
in particular: fire, flood, and drought. Due to these natural stresses, landscape
features that would normally be obscured by vegetation become clearly legible.
The resulting spatial configurations are often suffused with abundant light and
atmospheric effect, but it is typically the coherent patterns and textures of
the endemic vegetation that establish the essence of the scene.
As natural
landscapes go, these environments are, on the whole, not very complex from a visual
point of view, and it is in part their simplicity that attracts me to them. On
the other hand, understanding that their visual attributes, and indeed their very
existence, are a result of thousands of years of natural disturbance, for me,
adds a great deal of significance and even mystery to the imagery. I find
I am drawn repeatedly to visit and to paint these places where the bend of an
opening around distant trees invites exploration as the mind wanders over sunlit
grasses. Philip Juras
