Carl R. Hansen Woods
Cook County, Illinois
Oil on canvas
30 x 42 in.

Named for the former Cook County Commissioner who saved it from becoming a landfill, this old prairie grove, having long served as a farmer’s woodlot, still retains trees dating back to the time of settlement. After being restored in recent decades by the Poplar Creek Prairie Stewards and Cook County Forest Preserves it again offers visitors a delightful experience as a shady, yet open woodland with a wonderfully diverse understory. In this September view of the grove, burr and white oaks cast late afternoon shade across the seed heads of sweet Joe-Pye weed, bottlebrush grass, and elm-leaved and other goldenrods, while Drummond’s aster blooms in the foreground.
